When the Sun moves into the 4th sign of the Zodiac, Cancer, Summer begins in the Northern Hemisphere. The signs that begin seasons - Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn - are the Cardinal signs of the Zodiac, which means their primary expression is to move out towards an elemental (Fire, Water, Air & Earth) goal. Aries begins Spring, the archetype moves directly out to initiate new life. Cancer begins Summer, the archetype moves indirectly out to initiate an emotional response. Libra begins Autumn, the archetype moves directly out to initiate relations with others. Capricorn begins Winter, the archetype moves indirectly out to initiate perseverance.
Cancer is the Cardinal Water sign - it is primarily concerned with initiating containment (of emotions, feelings, memories, family.) And this action occurs passively - Cancer isn’t aggressive in its pursuit of warmth & belonging, it indirectly creates situations that will draw out an emotional response within others. Cancer, like the other water signs - Scorpio & Pisces - is a sponge; it absorbs the emotions within its environment, becomes a carrier of them, conforms to them, and etches an emotional imprint within their shell so they’ll never forget. The archetype needs emotional bonding, acceptance and to express tender love & care within its space - when Cancer is able to perform its maternal instincts upon another, an intimate and deep connection is formed. This makes it difficult for Cancer to differentiate its feelings from those within their environment, and it makes it difficult for Cancer to let go. Once a Cancer has formed an emotional connection to another, they become part of their “family” or “blood,” and they will be fiercely loyal, protective, and devoted to them. The “shell” of the Crab, the symbol associated with the Cancer archetype, is the Cancer’s (tight-knit) safe place - their home, family, origins, memories - a place they can retreat back into when there are threats from the outside world. And like a Crab, Cancer will die without a loving and supportive shell - a place that makes them feel like they belong…because there is nothing worse to a Cancer than being rejected by its home.
During Cancer Season, the Sun is moving through the degrees of Cancer. But Cancer is governed by the Moon - this means that while the Sun moves through Cancer, its will and intentions for initiating emotional responses are influenced by the sign placement of the transiting Moon. Example: Cancer Season begins with the Moon in Aries, so for the first couple of days of Summer, expect defensive, possibly violent, responses to perceived threats of one’s security and support. I’d imagine passionate displays of patriotism and a willingness to fight for the vulnerable.

Highlights of Cancer Sxn 2022:
2022’s Cancer Season starts off directly after the last quarter square of the Gemini Moon cycle; with the transiting Moon in the early degrees of Aries, a few degrees behind Jupiter, we can expect this season to be a reflection of our internal needs for something that feels authentically ourselves, that is (mostly) separate from our origins, though, it is likely there is a “seed” from our past…a piece we are holding onto that will cultivate foresight. We may find ourselves preoccupied with building emotional foundations and connections that give us the space to be as big and bold as we’ve always wanted to be. Our wills and intentions (the Sun) are likely to be indirectly, but tenaciously, moving towards a feeling of “home” - a place or position where we feel safe to be who we are and to assert ourselves towards goals that fulfill our legitimate needs for survival, autonomy, but also, nurturance.
I suspect this Cancer season will bring a fair share of new homes, families, and support systems…which also means the next four weeks will come with a lot of endings - the most challenging aspect of this season, as the Crab struggles the most with letting go. We may even feel like we’re being forced to cut ties, like we’re swinging an ax towards an umbilical cord, trying to escape a narrow and stifling perspective ourselves, so we can move towards a path that offers freedom. Some of us may find ourselves completely defying the odds that have been stacked against us, and making moves for ourselves that will nourish our capacity for self-acceptance for years to come.
